The Founder's Tower
A tower, a spiral stair, a locked door, and one small light in a high window.
You can see it from every field on the estate. That was deliberate. The Foundress had it built so that a girl anywhere on a hundred acres could look up and find it, and she was a practical woman and she got what she asked for.
At the foot of the stair there is a door, and the door is locked, and it is the only locked door in the whole of St Elowen’s.
And every night, at dusk, the light comes on up there. You can stand on the gravel and watch it happen. It simply arrives in the window, small and gold and perfectly steady, and it burns all night, and in the morning it is out.
Ask anybody. Go on. Ask Matron, who tells you everything, and watch her find something to do.
