Emily Ashworth

First Form, Elm

The girl this all happens to. She comes up from London on the first day wanting one thing more than any other: to belong. She is brave and she is kind, and she is also ambitious, in a way she has not yet learned to be careful of.

She loves
Her little sister Daisy, and the doll Daisy pressed into her hands at the station. Being useful. Getting things right.
She fears
That she is ordinary. That she will not be wanted. That she has not, in truth, earned her place.

What she is not telling you

She wants to be good. She wants, almost as much, to be seen to be good, and she will spend a long time, and a whole silver star she did not earn, learning the difference between the two.
