St Elowen’s Lumen servamus
What to bring, and how we go on

Uniform & Rules

We do not ask for very much. What we ask for, we mean.

What to bring

You will need a trunk, a warm coat, and a good pair of walking shoes. You will not need to be clever, or brave, or good at hockey. You will find that you become these things here, mostly by accident, and usually at the worst possible moment.

  • A trunk, with your name-tapes sewn in. Matron is exacting about name-tapes.
  • A warm coat, for the walk down to Chapel, which is colder than it looks.
  • Good walking shoes, and games kit, and a dressing gown for the dormitory.
  • Writing paper and stamps, for Sunday letters home.
  • One small thing from home, of your own choosing. A girl is allowed to be homesick, and it helps to have something to be homesick with.

How we go on

We ask three things of our girls, and only three: courage, kindness, and honour. Nearly every rule at St Elowen’s is one of those three, wearing sensible shoes.

Bounds, and the Cedar
Girls are asked not to go beyond the cedar without a mistress. Girls have been known to ask why. The answer is always the same, and always kind.
Lock-up, and Prep
There is a time to be busy and a time to be still, and the bell will tell you which. Prep is quiet. Lock-up is kept.
Letter day
Every Sunday, the whole school writes home. No girl is excused, because the girl who least wants to write is usually the girl who most needs to.
The one that is not a rule
Touch the Duke for luck on your way out to a match. This is not a rule. You will do it anyway.

It isn’t courage to do wrong.

Beth said that, and the whole dormitory went quiet, because she was right.
